Theatre actress Oon Shu An on New Year’s resolution, make-up therapy and healthy holiday indulging

ooh shu an 1stVersatile, funny and adorable, theatre actress and host Oon Shu An no doubt belongs to a new generation of actors who refuses to let roles or labels define them. Unlike other stars who got discovered through modelling, Shu An knew at a very young age that she wanted to perform. Hence, she took up acting at La Salle College of the Arts.

The FLY Entertainment Artiste started honing her acting chops when she was only 14 years old. At 19, she already starred in her first feature film, Becoming Royston. Bilingual and proud of her heritage, Shu An has starred in several Mandarin and English shows, proving her versatility and flexibility. Among the projects she did include City Night Songs, The King Lear Project: A Trilogy, Kitchen Musical, Incanto, Random Island, and Love In A Cab, among others.

With her down-to-earth and bubbly personality, Shu An managed to gain the respect of fans – not only in the entertainment industry for her ability to shift effortlessly from drama to comedy (or from acting and dancing to hosting) – but also in the beauty industry through her online beauty review show Tried and Tested on clicknetwork.tv, which to date has over 1.3 million views.

To kick-start the New Year, Ezyhealth spoke with the sprightly young actress for some much-needed healthy dose of fun and novelty!

Ezyhealth: What does the New Year mean to you?

Shu An: It means that AN ENTIRE YEAR HAS PASSED!!! It means that time has proven, once again, that it flies, and I should really stop being so surprised. The New Year makes me feel like, this year, I can do anything I put my mind to.

Ezyhealth: Do you believe in making New Year’s resolutions? If so, what’s yours?

Shu An: If there is something you want to do, yes! Resolve to do it this year! Personally, I am addicted to sugar. I love sugar so much! But this year, I am deciding to take control of it because it really isn’t healthy. I don’t have to cut it out completely, but I can’t be having it all the time.

Ezyhealth: How do you make sure you’re able to keep your resolution? Any tips for our readers?

Shu An: I am going to have a list of compelling reasons as to why I want to stop my sugar addiction. When I lose focus, I will look at that and remind myself. If that doesn’t work for you, find more persuasive reasons. Most importantly, don’t give up just because you didn’t “stick to the plan”. Just keep at it!

Ezyhealth: What do you usually do during the holidays?

Shu An: As a freelancer, sometimes I work during the holidays, so it really depends on the circumstances! It’s also quite hard to plan in advance because you can get calls for work the week before. So if I’m free, I’ll do whatever my family is doing. Occasionally, I will block a week and go on a holiday, or just spend time with the people I love. I’m a real homebody.

Ezyhealth: How do you make sure you enjoy all the holiday and CNY feasts without gaining a pound?

Shu An: I prioritise. If it’s only available during Chinese New Year, for example, my mother’s popiah, then I’ll eat more. If it’s available all year round, I’ll have some but not too much! If the added weight makes me unhappy, I’ll exercise and work it off because we only live once, and we should indulge at times!

Ezyhealth: Tell us more about your online beauty review show, Tried and Tested, what makes it different from other make-up blogs and why do you think your fans love it?

Shu An: Maybe because the show is fun, and sometimes we throw in things that aren’t make-up related! For example, we tried this NeverWet Spray we saw on YouTube which claims to waterproof your stuff, and it really worked! You have to see it to believe it.

Ezyhealth: What three important things you can share with us about make-up therapy?3

Shu An: First, you will go through many wrong foundations, many wrong blushers, and many wrong eyeliners before you find the right one for you. DON’T GIVE UP. It is out there somewhere. Second, use it to enhance what you like about your face and let that make you feel good. Third, just because it’s expensive doesn’t necessarily mean it’s good! Do some research online before you splurge. I find www.makeupalley.com very useful.

Ezyhealth: How do you manage to indulge your sweet tooth and maintain a svelte figure at the same time?

Shu An: I like to look out for healthier alternatives, which is why I was so happy when I found out that Soyato ice cream was back! And I was even happier when they wanted me to be their ambassador!! Soyato is healthier because it has three times less calories than regular ice cream. It’s only 100kcal per 100ml, and a huge plus for me is that it’s dairy free! Do you know you can burn off the calories from a single scoop of Soyato ice cream just by watching a two-hour movie?

Ezyhealth: What’s your favourite workout routine and why?

Shu An: I like doing circuits at home because it’s easy to get into and it cuts out a whole list of excuses!

Ezyhealth: Aside from acting and singing, what other things are you passionate about? 

Shu An: Talking about relationships – healthy, loving relationships. It could be with your partner, your friends, or just about anyone in your life. Sometimes, I hear of abusive relationships (both emotionally and physically) and it makes me really sad. It would be great if we could just talk about it, open discussions. I started a YouTube show, Sex and Love, with my boyfriend. We did one episode and are now figuring out how to continue!

Ezyhealth: What are you working on right now, and what can your fans expect from you this year?

Shu An: This year will be interesting! More Tried and Tested, Sex and Love, and…. I’m going back to my theatre roots! I have three theatre shows coming up, one of which really scares me because I will be writing and devising it with Checkpoint Theatre, and it will be the first time I am doing anything of that sort! But I am very excited about it because they are just so amazing at what they do. Here’s to the New Year and new challenges!!!!
