Tooth decay is the most common childhood ailment– it’s five times more prevalent than asthma. Dental caries is a preventable disease but every year, hundreds of preschoolers suffer unnecessarily from dental pain and painful dental procedures. In fact, research shows 18% of children are dental-phobic by the age of 10 years. As a parent, how can you help your child break the cycle of tooth decay, treatment and fear towards dental care? National Dental Centre Singapore’s (NDCS) paediatric dentists introduce the concept of dental parenting and teach you how by sharing the following topics: when should you bring your child to the dentist, myths and misconceptions on dental health, managing the fussy eater, and choosing the right dentist for your child.

Do you have diabetes and wish to take charge of your diet and to better manage your blood sugar? Join the Singapore Heart Foundation in a workshop where you will learn about diabetes – what it is and how you can manage it well, calculate your estimated energy requirement, determine your carbohydrate (CHO) budget and number of CHO exchange allowance, count carbohydrates, read food labels to determine the CHO contents and exchanges, and plan your meals, glycaemic index (GI) and glycaemic load (GL). Highlights of the workshop include hands-on meal-planning and food label-reading, cooking demonstration, and food tasting.

Singapore Cancer Society’s Race Against Cancer is Back! On Sunday, 21 July 2013, runners will once again compete individually and in teams in the 15km and 10km competitive challenges for the Race Against Cancer 2013 (RAC 2013). There will also be a 5km fun run for non-competitive runners during that time. Last year, RAC 2012 raised more than $750,000 to aid those who have been impacted by cancer. Singapore Cancer Society hopes to exceed this amount and is expecting some 8,500 runners and more than 100 corporate teams to participate. Joan Ong, Josaline Seah and Goh Teng Yin – have initiated the Rise & Shine movement to provide parents and educators a platform to learn, share and identify holistic approaches in raising healthier and happier children.
The movement was officially launched on 3 March by Dr Amy Khor, Minister of State, Ministry of Health and Ministry of Manpower, at the The Lawn@Marina Bay. The Rise & Shine Carnival kick started the movement, which will be followed by an outreach programme to parents, caregivers and kids at public libraries and preschools. The culmination of the movement’s efforts is the Rise & Shine Expo in September 2013, which is the only and largest children’s healthcare and development expo in Singapore.
The Rise & Shine Carnival was jointly organised by four students from the Nanyang Technological University who independently spearheaded the Rise & Shine Breakfast Campaign that seeks to champion healthy breakfast for kids.
