Balancing Essentials

Manage stress and bring balance to your life with essential oils

iStock_000040678566_FullSince the dawn of time, the essences of plant parts, herbs and spices have been used to balance overall health. Ancient wisdom has proved to be sound as modern science discovers that the aromas of therapeutic essential oils stimulate the limbic system of the brain, the centre of memory and emotion. This happens because the sense of smell is governed by the olfactory system, which has direct access to the brain. When essential oils are inhaled, the molecules are able to penetrate the limbic system, which brings about a powerful balancing effect on the mind, mood, and emotions, thus harmonising physical and emotional well-being.

In the journey to achieve overall balance, one must also learn the importance of managing stress. Everyone experiences stress as a result of the many demands we face on a day-to-day basis. If one experiences stress at high levels or for long periods of time, the body elevates the release of cortisol – the ‘fight-or-flight’ hormone – which hijacks the rest of the hormonal system and can have a negative impact on our health. Using essential oils can be a great tool to inspire a positive emotional state and can help one to rediscover peace, balance and joy by reducing tension and stimulating a sense of emotional well-being.

Essential OilWhat are essential oils?

Therapeutic-grade essential oils are not actual oils, but the unadulterated, highly concentrated liquid essences of the plants that they are derived from.

Essential oils have many benefits. They:

  • Are a non-toxic alternative for supporting health.
  • Help promote physical, emotional and spiritual well-being.
  • Help with detoxification.
  • Contain powerful antioxidants that help stimulate blood flow, which increases oxygen and nutrient delivery in the body.
  • Are biodegradable and will not harm the planet.
  • Are easy to use – feeling better often just involves whipping out a bottle of essential oil and breathing in the wonderful aromas!
