High demand aesthetic treatments during the holidays

21526420_xxlThe holidays are a great time to go on vacations, create precious memories with loved ones or catch up with erstwhile friends. In view of these social meetings, many people desire to look their best just in time for the holidays. Yearend is often the period when dermatologists and doctors get a high influx of patients looking for some quick fixes or last minute help to achieve healthier-looking skin.

There are several aesthetic treatments in the market that can help one look like a superstar in his or her own right. These treatments are gaining popularity as people become more and more beauty-conscious.

Botox

Botox can help reverse the effects of time. Botulinum toxin, a protein, is injected into a muscle using a fine needle. Patients experience minimal discomfort. Thereafter, muscle activity is relaxed. The muscle can no longer contract and the appearance of wrinkles will soften.  It can also be used to enhance facial shape, for example, to create a V-shaped face or slim down a square jawline. It can also be used to shape the eye brows.

Though uncommon, there are certain side effects that come with a Botulinum toxin injection. Patients may feel pain at the injection site or bruises from the injection. These will subside within a few days. Muscle asymmetry and frozen look are uncommon.

Fillers

Fillers, as the name suggests, are substances used to fill wrinkles and folds, and to replace volume loss. Hyaluronic acid, one of the components of the skin, is the most common filler used. It can also be used to fill up acne craters or to create a higher nose bridge. They are injected directly into the problem areas. The doctor will then massage the blobs and even them out. After treatment, patients enjoy a more youthful appearance. Many patients also opt for fillers to create cute muscles underneath the eyes or to get a pair of luscious lips and achieve a sexy pout.

The treatments typically take about 30 to 45 minutes. Patients will notice a visible difference even after the first treatment! Due to the injections, patients may experience redness and, in more severe cases, bruising or swelling. Make-up can be applied to conceal these side effects. The swelling may take two days to subside, while the bruising takes up to two weeks.

Chemical Peels

Sun-damaged skin will benefit from a chemical peel. A minimally invasive procedure, it involves applying chemical solutions to the skin and causing damage – in a controlled fashion – to the skin. The idea is that the skin will then go to work, repairing the damage as part of its natural healing process. The skin will exfoliate, thereby removing the old skin and any imperfections.

There are different types of chemical peels. For more superficial peels, the patient will experience a burning sensation that lasts for 10 to 15 minutes during the treatment. After that, the patient will see redness in the skin, not unlike a sunburn.

Deeper peels can be done for acne scars, deep wrinkles and severe sun damage. If performed correctly, the treated area will reveal regenerated, suppler skin. Chemical peels are also a good option for those who are battling acne problems, liver spots or irregular skin pigmentation. The downside of deep chemical peels is the long recovery time, which is up to a week. There are also the potential risks. Chemical peels are known to cause scarring or discolouration of the skin.

Optimal Pulse Light Technology7031096_xxl

Lumenis, the inventor of the Intense Pulsed Light (IPL) technology, has created a newer version of its trailblazing solution. Called M22 Optimal Pulse Technology (M22 OPT), this treatment promises short downtime and better results. If one is preparing for a big event, say a reunion, then the best time to go for a treatment is 10 days prior.

Each light pulse the machine produces is able to penetrate skin tissues and create controlled destruction to the imperfections, such as pigments and veins, while improving the surrounding healthy skin. Utilising the Square-Off technology, the energy is also distributed more evenly within individual and sub-pulses. This technology reduces the pain caused by zapping or burning sensations, which sometimes occur during skin rejuvenation treatments.

The treatment will bring a natural glow back to the skin. It can also help to remove pigmentations, freckles, spots as well as tighten pores. It can even be used to treat melasma! The treatment takes up to 30 minutes, and patients can use cosmetics immediately after the treatment. The M22 OPT also helps to stimulate the production of collagen, which is vital for beautiful and smooth skin.

Fractional Laser Skin Resurfacing

Some patients opt for fractional skin resurfacing treatments for a smoother, fresher looking skin to improve their skin tone and texture, reduce wrinkles around their eyes, and improve the appearance of acne and surgical scars. The most common areas used for fractional skin resurfacing is on the face, neck, chest, arms, legs and back.

Fractional laser technology is well-known to target ageing and sun-damaged skin with microscopic laser columns that safely penetrates the skin’s deeper layer to create new collagen. The laser treats only a fraction of tissue at a time, leaving the surrounding tissue untouched, which promotes rapid healing.

Depending on the level of treatment, some patients may experience redness or swelling after the procedure, which diminishes as quickly as the next day or over the next several days. The skin will flake and exfoliate normally, as the old and damaged cells are being replaced with fresh, glowing, healthy skin.

Seeking Aesthetic Treatments the Right Way

Before patients decide on any of the aesthetic procedures, patients are encouraged to seek medical consultations to ensure that they get the appropriate treatments to improve their skin conditions. They also have to ensure that the quick-fix aesthetic solutions received are conducted by trained professionals.
