Are You at a Loss?

Restore your hairline with FUE hair transplant

iStock_000036261368_LargeMale Pattern Hair Loss (MPHL) is the most common form of hair loss in men, afflicting up to 70% of men. The condition is based on its distinctive pattern of hairline deterioration: it starts with hair thinning at both temples. As the condition worsens, the hairline moves backwards towards the back of the head with a typical M-shaped hairline, before resulting eventually in the much-dreaded U-shape in the last stage of MPHL.

Blood tests are usually normal, as the condition is a genetic and hormonal one. That is why it is quite common to see a number of bald scalps around the dinner table during big family gatherings!

Why is there a need to treat MPHL?

Based on clinical studies, men who suffer from Androgenetic Alopecia (the medical term for MPHL) are 75% less confident, especially when interacting with the opposite sex. Men with hair loss have also reported loss of self-esteem, introversion, and feeling unattractive. It is therefore important to treat MPHL. Treated sufferers will improve tremendously in their self-confidence and social lives.

Hair transplants are THE ONLY WAY to restore the hairline at the front and temple hairline regions in sufferers of MPHL. This is because the hair follicles lost during the unarrested progression of the condition are unable to regrow, even if oral Finasteride (Propecia) is started later on.

It is also recommended for other parts of the scalp (e.g. crown/vertex) if oral and topical therapy have failed to control the progression of the condition.

The scalp of the front and back of the head arise from different embryological origins, which is why the hair follicles at the back of the scalp (the donor area) are resistant to the effects of the balding gene and hormone. Therefore, they would not bald and will grow as per normal even if they have been transplanted to the front and temple regions of the hairline. This is a tried and tested principle termed as “donor dominance”.

What is the process of an FUE hair transplant?

FUT refers to Strip Surgery – the traditional method of follicle harvesting via excising a long rectangular piece of the scalp from the donor area and then dissecting the hair follicles under a microscope.

FUE refers to Follicular Unit Extraction – the newest method of follicle extraction strand by strand via a motorised engine. FUE surgery consists of the harvesting and implantation phases.

During the harvesting phase, local anaesthesia is given and the individual hair follicle units are painstakingly extracted one by one by the doctor in an FUE hair transplant. They are then stored in petri dishes and soaked in special nutrient mediums to protect the health of the follicles, whilst awaiting the implantation phase.

The implantation phase commences after hairline design by the doctor. This step is extremely important – a poorly designed hairline is a dead giveaway of having done hair transplants. Take a close look at your own hairline and you will notice that every strand of your hair points in a different direction and angle, and that the front hairline consists of only single-hair follicles when compared to the other parts of the scalp. Again, local anaesthesia is given and the extracted hair follicles are then implanted one by one into the front of the scalp, taking great care to create a natural-looking hairline.

How long does it take to see the results?

You can note the immediate improvement of your hairline as the newly transplanted grafts recreate your original hairline. The hair follicles will shed between two weeks and three months due to a phenomenon known as “shock loss”. Fret not, as they will return after three months. It usually takes nine to 12 months after surgery for the transplanted hairs to grow at least 6 – 9 cm long, and give great aesthetic results.

If it’s good enough for them, it’s good enough for you!

Famous celebrities like Wayne Rooney of Manchester United Football Club, AJ McLean of The Backstreet Boys, Gary Walsh (judge of “The X Factor” show) have undergone FUE hair transplants and enjoyed great aesthetic improvements in their hairline, thus regaining their self-esteem and social confidence, and improving their quality of life greatly.
