Sing-Kobe Liver Transplant Centre Opens at Mount Elizabeth Novena Hospital

The Sing-Kobe Liver Transplant Centre was officially opened in September at Mount Elizabeth Novena Hospital. The new transplant centre is a collaboration between International Frontier Medical Support led by Dr Koichi Tanaka, Medicro Partners Pte. Ltd. (100% owned by Mitsui &Co., Ltd.) and a liver transplant team led by Dr Prema Raj. The centre is designed to meet the growing demand in the region for life-saving liver transplant surgery – typically from patients suffering from biliary atresia or severe hepatitis.

According to Dr Prema, the centre expects to carry out between 10 and 30 transplants per year. Approximately 30 patients in Singapore are on a waiting list for a liver transplant.

Dr Tanaka and Dr Prema are recognised as world leaders in living donor liver transplant (LDLT) surgery. Dr Tanaka pioneered the development of the LDLT procedure, carrying out his first living donor liver transplant in 1990 at Kyoto University, Japan. He and his team have performed more than 2,000 LDLT procedures. Dr Prema heads the Hepatobiliary and Pancreatic and Liver Transplant Surgery practice at Mount Elizabeth Hospital, Singapore. He has been collaborating with Dr Tanaka on LDLT procedures since 1996.
