Question of the month: “How do you make sure your festive feast for the holidays is as healthy as possible?”

Use heart healthy canola oil if you need to cook with oil. For low-heat cooking, use extra virgin olive oil, which has more polyphenols because it is not chemically processed. Replace white rice, bread and flour with whole grains in your recipes. Cut down on saturated animal fat by going for delicious soups and stews made with beans, lentils, potatoes and squash. Salads can be a substantial and satisfying main dish with chunks of bean curd or chewy tempeh, chickpeas, beans, quinoa, pumpkin seeds, and walnuts. Use herbs and spices for flavouring instead of salt. There are so many dishes, savoury and sweet, that can be made with the vast assortment of healthy, natural produce available.

If I am preparing a big dinner, I will use half-fat ingredients whenever possible. It is better to grill or steam the food instead of frying. When it comes to roasting, low-calorie spray oil is used. The gravy for the food has to be refrigerated so as to harden it, and thereafter skin the fat off. More onions, garlic, celery and vegetable are used as dressing, while the low-fat, low sodium chicken broth or vegetable broth is used for adding flavour to the food. Fruit platter and non-alcoholic drinks will be served as these are healthy choice. Also, group activities are planned to help the people at the feast to burn off some calories.

With the holidays upon us, feasting, drinking and the inevitable consumption of sweets tend to get in the way of our usual healthy eating. Being cautious of not letting these upcoming holiday meals ruin me with their high fat, sugar, caloric yield and shortage on nutrition, I opt for more nutrient-dense items that will actually make me feel fuller and not seriously suffering the next day. Skip the belly ache and food coma by reaching for red and green foods – mainly fruits and vegetables – which are rich in nutrients.  They also balance the traditional foods I love with delicious, low-calorie options. Some of my picks include beets, cranberries, pomegranates, sweet red peppers, tomatoes, and broccoli, among others. Lastly, think beyond food. Don’t just look at what’s on our plate. The best advice is to schedule exercise sessions, as well.
