Tang Wei – Mesmerising Allure

Gaining prominence in the film industry, Chinese actress Tang Wei, wins admiration both for her work and her beauty

Rising prominence through her acting in Ang Lee’s acclaimed movie, ‘Lust, Caution’, Tang Wei is a well-recognised actress not just because of her stellar performances, but also of her flawless beauty.

Recognition pours

Beyond the mesmerising allure is a truly serious actress. Tang Wei won the CCTV Movie Channel Award in 2006 for Outstanding Digital Movie Actress for her role in ‘Policewoman Swallow’. She has won several awards for her work in ‘Lust, Caution’ including a Golden Horse Award for Best New Performer and a nomination for Best Actress. She bagged the Best Actress award for her performance in the movie ‘Late Autumn’ at the Baeksang Awards in Korea and for her role in the film ‘Crossing Hennessy’ at the 11th Chinese Film Media Awards Ceremony in Macau. She has graced the Venice Film Festival and Cannes Film Festival, thanks to her notable acting.

The real Tang Wei

And so we wonder, who is Tang Wei in real and reel life? Ezyhealth and Beauty is privileged to have a private interview with the critically-acclaimed actress.

Ezyhealth & Beauty:  Who is Tang Wei on and off camera?

Tang Wei: I am the same, both on and off camera. As a woman, the way you dress says a lot about who you are and it can affect your mood. I am a strong believer in dressing to the occasion and behaving appropriately. For example, a night at a gala event, dressed in an elegant evening gown, brings out my femininity.

Whenever I’m not working, I’ll be in a T-shirt, pair of jeans and flats. This is when I am usually in my boyish playful mood.

EHB: You grew up with a stage actress mom and a painter dad. How influential were they in your becoming an actress?

TW: My parents were very influential in my becoming an actress. I truly respect them for their determination, drive, thriftiness and firmness in decisions. My father started painting when he was just ten years old. When I was little, he endured hard times when he had to draw through the night at home. His passion in painting has brought him success, despite the fact that he didn’t earn much.

My mother is a “superwoman” who set a very positive example for me. She gave up her dreams in acting to take care of her children. She is actually a very lively and adorable lady who would make a wonderful actress. She is a loving mother who did all the household chores and looked after me, ensuring I grew up with the right principles and did not get led astray. My parents always had an artistic nature, and are a constant source of inspiration.

The life of an actress

EHB: How do you prepare for a role?

TW: My preparation for a role involves a total immersion into the role. It is important to understand the character in her multiple facets, through understanding her life, behaviour, down to her everyday choices such as style of attire and eating habits. Every detail is crucial in helping me shape the character from within and step into the role.

I really enjoy this creative process as it ultimately frees me to express the true emotion that brings the role to life, otherwise the characters would be more two-dimensional.

EHB: How important are acting awards and recognition to you?

TW: Quoting the late Steve Jobs “the real award is going through the process”. Awards and recognition are not important to me. It is something that is nice to have but what is important to me is the journey.

EHB:  Who are your favourite Hollywood actor and actress? Hollywood movie?

TW: Just to name a few, my favourite European movies are “A Beautiful Life”, “Dancer in the Dark”, “Wild Strawberries”, “Mala Morska Vila”. These movies are inspirational and they show me the true meaning of life. I used to love watching them when I was young and they are reminiscent of my childhood.

My favourite Hollywood actors and actresses are Helen Mirren, Kate Winslet, Marion Cotillard, Marlon Brando, Maggie Cheung and Leslie Cheung.

EHB: Any dream roles?

TW: My dream role would be acting as a sword woman. I like to challenge myself and I believe this is the fastest way to grow and learn as an actress. I would love for an opportunity to be in a role where I am forced to get out of my comfort zones and experience the different aspects of the world. This allows me to immerse myself in a wide variety of cultures and languages.

EHB: What do you consider your greatest accomplishment to date?

TW: I recently finished filming for ‘Wu Xia’, a $20 million martial arts movie directed by one of Asia’s top film makers, Peter Chan. It was filmed in China’s rural Yunnan province. I played a traditional village woman “Ah Yu” in this movie. This is something I’ve always wanted to do for a long time as it is different from the other roles I’ve played before. “Ah Yu” is a total package of what I am looking for in life: She has a great husband, two sons and a lovely house in a field. It is my greatest accomplishment to date, almost like a fairy tale to me.

Beyond acting

EHB: People admire your beauty. What is your skin beauty routine?

TW: My daily skin beauty routine involves using SK-II Facial Treatment Gentle Cleanser to cleanse my skin thoroughly to ensure make-up is removed completely. Next, I use the SK-II Facial Treatment Essence to keep skin hydrated and firm. Apart from that, I always keep the Facial Treatment Cream Foundation – along with Facial Treatment Essence, Facial Treatment Milk, a sunblock and lipstick – in my make-up bag for quick touch-ups.

When traveling frequently, I use the SK-II Facial Treatment Mask to ensure my skin stays moisturised. Apart from keeping to a skincare regimen, I believe maintaining a healthy and balanced diet is essential to crystal clear skin. I like soup and congee that are easy to be digested. I like Pu-er tea and red wine sometimes. I exercise regularly, too. I use Facial Treatment Essence every day to keep the glow on my face. When it’s too dry, using the mask at night can be a great boost of hydration.

EHB: Which skin product is a “must have” for you? Why?

TW: The SK-II’s Facial Treatment Essence is my beauty “must-have”. It is for my skin what water is for my body. Now, no matter what environment or stress my skin is exposed to, I always keep a bottle of SK-II Facial Treatment Essence handy, as it allows me flexibility in my lifestyle, by maintaining healthy, shiny, smooth, firm and radiant skin.

I also enjoy the unique smell it has whenever I pat it on my skin. My skin has finally found the right product and I only wish I had started using it 10 years ago. I am sure my complexion would be even more firm and radiant. I am relaxed knowing my skin is happy.

EHB: Do you ever get afraid about getting old as an actress?

TW: Getting old is inevitable and something one should embrace instead of resenting it. I believe the best way to age is to accomplish as many dreams as possible when you are young. Always be optimistic in life and take preventive measures in health and beauty. I am not worried about my skin as I age as long as I have SK-II as my life-long companion. SK-II’s Facial Treatment Essence helps restore skin’s natural glow, as if the skin is “reborn” every day.

EHB: Any beauty and fitness resolutions for 2012?

TW: My beauty and fitness resolutions for 2012 are firstly, to wear good quality sunscreen which provides adequate coverage for my skin. Since I fly quite often, I also have to apply hydrating mask often to ensure that my skin is well-hydrated. Most importantly, with confidence comes beauty and I’m certain that this newfound confidence will lead every woman to true happiness.

EHB: How about some beauty advice or tips for 2012?

TW: Staying committed to your daily skincare regimen is crucial. Despite how busy you are, always take time to thoroughly cleanse your skin and hydrate it accordingly. Secondly, try going out once a week without makeup to allow your skin to breathe free and easy. Lastly, always drink enough fluids to keep yourself hydrated!
