Vitamin B12

Guardian of your red blood cells and nervous system

16487755_xlOur bodies need vitamin B12 to make red blood cells and maintain a healthy nervous system. Deficiency can lead to anaemia (a condition due to a lack of red blood cells) and nerve damage. While it’s part of the B family of vitamins, vitamin B12 is unique in many ways, as the table below illustrates.

Although required in minute amounts, some of vitamin B12’s unique properties make it a nutrition challenge, especially to specific groups of people. Strict vegans and vegetarians who do not consume animal products – including milk, cheese and eggs – are at high risk of developing anaemia. The elderly are also at risk because as we grow older, our bodies become less adept at absorbing this complex compound.
table 2The Health Promotion Board (HPB) recommends a daily intake of 2.4mcg of vitamin B12 for average adults. Several types of fish, shellfish, and dairy products are excellent sources. If you are a vegetarian or vegan, you may need to go out of your way to obtain this vitamin, such as taking a supplement.
