Vitamin B7

For hair, nails and skin growth

10870654_xlVitamin B7 – more commonly known as biotin or vitamin H – is part of the B-complex group of vitamins, which helps to keep your nervous system healthy and is essential for metabolism of carbohydrates and fats. In particular, vitamin B7 aids in the healthy growth of hair, skin and nails, and is often found in cosmetic products.

12323480_xlAccording to the National Academy of Sciences in the United States, the daily adequate intake of vitamin B7 for an average adult is 30mcg (micrograms), while that for breastfeeding women is 35mcg. The Health Promotion Board does not specify a recommended daily intake of vitamin B7. Vitamin B7 has not been associated with any side effects even at high doses.

You may be glad to know that the bacteria in our intestines synthesise sufficient vitamin B7 for our bodies to function healthily. However, some are born with inherited disorders and some others may acquire habits that inhibit absorption (e.g. alcoholism). Thus, it is helpful to supplement our diets with dietary sources of vitamin B7.
