Workout like a Celebrity

A little inspiration to help you stick to your fitness resolution

Admit it, the number one New Year resolution on your list is to get fit… which was same as last year’s and the years before. Well, you are not alone. To lose weight is the number one must-do on most people’s New Year’s list. And not surprisingly, it’s also the most broken. By mid-February, 60% of new gym members start to lag behind in attendance. The most common reasons? Plain laziness and lack of inspiration and enthusiasm to exercise. But if you could workout like a celebrity, would you stick to your fitness resolution? Here’s a few workout inspiration to get you going.

Christina Applegate’s abs moves

American actress and breast cancer survivor Christina Applegate has one of the best abs in Hollywood. Thanks to her trainer, Teddy Bass, and her abs exercises. Bass shared with FitnessMagazine.com this exercise that helps Christina Applegate get flat abs.

The exercise: Around the world

A. Lie faceup on floor with knees bent, feet flat on floor and hands behind head with elbows out to sides. Cross left ankle over right knee.

B.  Lift shoulders as high as possible, bringing left elbow and shoulder toward right knee.

C. Return to center and crunch up, keeping left ankle on right knee.

D. Lower back to start and repeat, this time bringing right shoulder toward left knee.

E. Continue, moving from right to left with each rep. Do 12 to 15 reps; switch legs and repeat, moving from left to right.2

Anne Hathaway’s butt exercises

For Anne Hathaway, who will be playing the Catwoman in the upcoming Batman movie, these butt exercises, designed by her personal trainer, Joe Dowdell, tone her lower body in no time.

The exercise: Rotational step-up

A.        Stand with right side next to a step or stairs, placing right foot on step. Turn right foot 90 degrees, toes pointing to the right.

B.         Straighten right leg to stand up, turning hips so body now faces step. Place left foot on step. Return to starting position by stepping back with left foot. Do 12 to 15 reps on right leg; switch sides.

Beat the Clock, Build Endurance

Spend less time (about 20 to 30 seconds) resting between sets at the beginning of your workout when your muscles aren’t exhausted, and more time (40 to 60 seconds) as they become fatigued. This method, known as density training, can cut the time you spend working out by as much as 15 to 20 percent. It also forces your muscles to work harder while improving your endurance at the same time.2

Workout like a celebrity, the local way

Celebrity Fitness, a recognised fitness chain in the region, which opened its first Singapore branch this month, presents three must-try workout routines befitting a celebrity. They involve seduction, a hammock and a Tour de France.

DNA™

DNA consists of four main dance classes: Seduce, Raw, Insanity and Flavour. Seductive DNA blends the essence of flirty and sexy with a series of dance styles such as jazz, contemporary modern, street and funky style. DNA Raw is a dance program that features a variety of dynamic choreographies including Hip Hop and Funk. The Insanity DNA dance plays with unique shapes of choreography, as the movement combines a variation of dance that is formed between contemporary to pop modern styles, all into one dance. Flavour is a combination of different Latin styles and movement such as Salsa, Tango, Flamenco, Merenge and a few others.

 Celebrity Fitness Peloton™

Peloton is a fun and advanced-level cycling workout where you ride to the rhythm of energising music. After the fresh warm-up, you are coached through interval training for 12 to15 minutes, then onto the flats for 12-15 minutes. You finish the biggest part of the workout as your instructor will motivate and inspire you through mountain peaks for 15 minutes. Discover the endorphin high as you reach the top, followed by a 10 minute-ride home with a gentle stretch to finish.

Special Features: The upbeat music and Tour de France visuals drive the intensity of the class.

Floating Yoga™

Unlike the conventional yoga class that utilises only a yoga mat placed steadily on the ground, the Floating Yoga support will be from a “Hammock” suspension which acts as a soft trapeze to give balance and coordination to the body. Classes for Floating Yoga are multi-leveled, which varies from beginners to advance levels. Floating Yoga is a complete exercise program which brings a unique fusion technique that is revolutionary in relieving compressed joints and at the same time aligns the body from head to toe.
