In my teens, I’ve suffered from photo-sensitivity, whereby patches of my skin exposed to the sun would turn itchy and sometimes get blisters. This happened even when the sky was cloudy and overcast. So for the last 40-odd years (I’m now 57), I’ve been consciously avoiding the sun and following this skin protection regimen: 1) I use a daily sunblock with minimum 25 SPF on my face, neck, and other exposed areas of my body. 2) When walking in the sun, I wear long sleeves, a wide brimmed hat, and even gloves. 3) I avoid staying out under the sun between 10am and 4pm since reflected sunrays also adversely affect me. 4) Lastly, as I have freckles left from my childhood days which have now developed into age spots, I try to use make up with SPF for added protection.

Waking up to sunshine and sleeping with the moon rays in a well-ventilated, non-air conditioned room with daily prayers maintains my spiritual vigour. Working with kids adds bounce to my life and put on a smile even on moody days. In addition to all of that, regular rides on my bike means I pedal my way to health and occasional beach visits to unwind and rejuvenate.

It’s true that you are what you eat. Taking more vegetables and fruits and cutting down on oily fried food really help in keeping my skin healthy. I also drink lots of water to hydrate my skin and protect it from being dry. Besides food intake, applying body lotion helps make my skin feel softer. Sunblock lotions are essential to prevent skin ageing and pigmentation, too. For my face specifically, I make sure that I do my daily three-step routine: cleanse, tone, and moisturise, together with put-on masks once a week.  As common as it sounds, it is important to do all the above diligently!
