Unfiltered shower water contains chlorine, a toxic chemical used to kill bacteria and viruses. This chlorine is absorbed into the skin. Chlorine also evaporates and spreads throughout the house, where it can be inhaled by others. This re-vaporised water contains as much as 100 times the amount of chlorine in the water. Chlorine produces several potentially harmful substances, including chloroform, which is carcinogenic. The amount of chlorine we absorb from a single shower could be as much as the amount we get from drinking tap water an entire day. Possible short-term health consequences include respiratory problems like asthma and bronchitis, dry and brittle hair, itchy skin, dandruff, and eye irritations. Using a shower water filter makes showering safer. Otherwise, take cold, short showers. -– Maria Chan

Showering is a relaxing thing to do; and many times, we indulge in taking long showers unknowingly. However, we may not be aware that long-term exposure to chlorine that is used to treat our drinking and bathing water may cause conditions such as rashes, eye irritations, asthma and bronchitis, dry and flaking skin, dandruff and others. Showering in chlorinated water also doubles our exposure to the toxins as we do not only absorb them through our skin, but inhale when vaporised in the shower. Hence, do think twice when taking long relaxing showers. -– Tan Lay Moi

Firstly, spending too much time in the shower wastes water. Water is precious, especially in Singapore. Singapore does not have a natural water source and has to buy water from our neighbouring country, Malaysia. Secondly, soaking our skin for too long in the water exposes us to chlorine. Chlorine is harmful to the skin. Lastly, prolonged soaking of the skin promotes the growth of harmful bacteria and allergens which cause skin allergy problems. -– Celestine Bay
