June Winners

Question of the month: “How best can you protect and care for your eyes?”

June winners will each receive two bottles of AFC Diamond Vision worth $56.90/bottle!edited AFC Diamond Vision

Eye care starts with nutrition: foods and supplements rich in omega-3 fatty acids, lutein, astaxanthin, zinc, and vitamins C and E, which may help ward off age-related vision problems such as age-related macular degeneration and cataracts. Smoking is a big no as it damages the eyes and greatly increases the risks of these potentially blinding diseases. When out in the sun, wear sunglasses that block out UVA and UVB rays. Take short breaks from the computer, phone or TV screen every 20 minutes and look into the distance, to avoid eye strain and dry eyes. Use goggles or shields and common sense when handling dangerous chemicals or anything that may cause flying particles, or cooking with hot splattering oil.

Finally, go for regular eye exams and keep your eye prescription up to date.

Carrots rich in vitamin A, omega-3 fatty acids found in flaxseed oil and oily fish and herbal supplements such as bilberry are consumed to keep my eyes working properly and to protect against damage related to ageing. At work, computer-related glare is the cause of eye fatigue and discomfort.  The best way to reduce the glare is to adjust the contrast setting and monitor’s illumination. As I spend 8 hours a day in front of a computer, I wear a pair of progressive eyeglasses that are designed specifically for computer usage.  I learn to blink and look into the distance frequently, giving my eyes the opportunity to rest. When I want to sooth my eyes, I use a cool compress. In addition, the artificial eye tears help to reduce my eye irritation. When I am swimming, I wear goggles as they provide protection for this activity. I do not forget about using the sunglasses as such eyewear helps to protect my eyes from the sun’s ultraviolet rays.

There is also the comprehensive dilated eye examination which will give an update on my eye health. I am doing my best to ensure a sustainable future for good visual and ocular health.

From young, I had dry eyes and was told to eat more fruits and vegetables like carrots as they have vitamin A. As I grew older and developed mild cataracts, I took omega-3 (as advised by my eye doctor) and gochi (i.e. wolfberry) to nourish my eyes too.  I also try to sleep early to overcome eye fatigue.  When outdoors, I must wear my UV protected sunglasses because it is proven that such sunglasses will delay worsening of cataracts.  I also massage my eyes to relieve eye tiredness, and apply eye gel to improve my eyes’ appearance. Sufficient sleep is important to eyes because whenever one gets tired, the eyes will feel discomfort. Now, having read about the new supplement Diamond Vision that is formulated with 4 potent antioxidant carotenoids – Astaxanthin, Lutein, Zeaxanthin and Northern Europe Bilberry extract, and provides a broad spectrum eye protection to those who are exposed to harmful blue light from electronic gadgets, I am more convinced to consume this new formulation. I knew about Lutein, Zeaxanthin and Bilberry many years ago.  I wish to try Astaxanthin to improve my eyes further.
