Light and comfort are my priority. Naturally, everybody loves shoes with relatively good design too, but I’m expecting my running shoes to be breathable and well ventilated as well. Essentially, I’ll also look out for shoes with a good grip. I don’t wanna fly like Superman, particularly on rainy days. If I’m getting running shoes of a dark colour, I would prefer if it comes with reflective stripes, so that motorists and cyclists can see me from afar even if I’m wearing dark clothing at night. It seems like I’m asking a lot in a pair of shoes, but I truly believe good running shoes should possess these attributes. -– Chia Voon Foong

Firstly, gaining a better understanding of the shoes’ materials and construction can provide the shoe’s stability, comfort and snug fit to the runner. Secondly, you have to determine your arch type (flat, medium and high) and foot mechanics (under pronation, neutral pronation, mild over-pronation, severe over-pronation). Pronation is a term used to describe the natural inward roll of the foot during a runner’s gait cycle. Thirdly, you have to know which type of runner you want to be. Every runner has different goals and needs. Some runners need more cushioning and support for longer runs, while others need more durability for heated sprints. Finally, I will make sure my running shoes have the following advantages: superior cushioning, flexibility in the right places, stability or motion control, traction on road or trails, torsional stability-stiff where needed, night-time reflectivity and breathability. -– Loh Poh Wan

The best first step to finding the right running shoes is knowing what you will be doing with them. Are you a jogger or a runner? Are you training for a race? Be sure to identify any injuries you have developed from running as well. Problems like shin splints, blisters, tendonitis, and plantar fasciitis often can be reversed with the proper fitting running shoes. Athletic shoes are grouped into categories: running, training and walking. The features of a good jogging shoe include cushioning, flexibility, control and stability in the heel counter area, lightness, and good traction. Running shoes are designed to provide maximum overall shock absorption for the foot. Such a shoe should also have good heel control. -– Sofia Lim Siok Ngo
