I am a 29-year-old girl, and although I am slim, I have a big belly. I have always been teased by friends, naming me “pot belly” or “beer belly”. Among the saddest incidents for me was being mistaken for a pregnant lady on the various forms of public transport. Until last year, I looked into the mirror and told myself I must slim down my belly and let everyone who once laughed at me to shut up. Firstly, I begin with incorporating a healthy assortment of nutrients, which include some foods like avocado, peanuts and nuts in my daily meal. Secondly, I manage my insulin by increasing my healthy fat intake, as well as lowering my consumption of starchy carbohydrates, such as potatoes and rice. I strictly stay away from beer and other fattening foods, and I drink plenty of water as well. I also do exercises that target abs muscle area, such as crunches and leg lifting, as these are good for lower abs development. And lastly, I consume multi-vitamins to help balance out vitamin deficiencies in my body. -– Wong Su Lin

To lose unwanted belly fat, always take a walk after a meal. I move around for at least 20 minutes – this will help increase the metabolic rate and burn more calories, especially at the belly and butt – because if you just sit on your butt and rest your belly after a meal, that’s where the fats would accumulate! -– Tan Mei Ching

I have always been so frustrated with my tummy. No matter how hard I try to exercise and diet, my belly fat doesn’t go away. Until I read somewhere that it’s better to do short bursts of exercises, than long intensive ones. Now, instead of doing 200 crunches a day, I do planking and push-ups. I also try to move around a lot throughout the day. I try to limit my calorie intake by avoiding sweets and midnight snacks. Instead, I eat more vegetables and whole grains as much as possible. I have also stopped drinking alcohol, especially beer, as alcohol is one of the biggest culprits in developing a fat belly. -– Esther Kwee
